Plex adds support for 4K Playback on Amazon Fire TV 2

Good news: Plex has officially added 4K video playback support on the 2nd generation Amazon Fire TV with their v4.21.0.528 update. This means that you can now directly play 4K video on Fire TV 2 without transcoding the 4K file with Plex Media Server. The supported 4K video files even include H.265 HEVC encoded files.

Bad news: A lot of users find that the 4K video files don’t meet the required specifications for direct playback by Plex. The files should be encoded with a maximum bit depth of 8-bits per sample and contain metadata identifying them as having a Main profile level. In addition, surround sound is not supported, the files should have an AC3 or AAC audio track. Even the 4K files fits al the criteria, it may still not play directly due to the unfixed bug.
