GoPro Studio is smart video editor which makes it easier than ever to create professional-quality video with GoPro Hero Camera footages. Will GoPro Studio accept non-GoPro videos like 4K MOV/MP4 videos from DJI Phantom 4? Well, it is awesome to edit movies DJI Phantom 4 4K files in GoPro Studio and share your masterpiece with friends, however we found more than one guys are complaining the incompatibility issues when importing DJI Phantom 4 4K to GoPro Studio. For the purpose to help them get rid of the trouble, in this page, I will give you a quick workaround to import 4K files from DJI Phantom 4 to GoPro Studio for post production beautifully.

DJI Phantom 4 4K and GoPro Studio incompatibility issues

The following examples actually embody the issues that people encountered during editing DJI Phantom 4 4K files in GoPro Studio:

“I recorded some 4K MP4 footage from Phantom 4 saved to laptop. Downloaded GoPro Studio software to edit the footage but it always crashes during transfer?? Why?”

“Does anyone know what video format needs to be used on the DJI 4 4K camera to work in the GoPro Studio video editor. Been using this program for over a year and like it. Any suggestions to make video editing smoother and easier? GoPro Studio edits my files OK, but it does not accept the initial video off the chip for cut and trim-like editing or at least did not for me. Is that the same for you, or what am I doing wrong?”

Reason Why GoPro Studio won’t accept DJI Phantom 4 4K videos

According to GoPro Studio official statement, GoPro Studio supports importing the following files in

“Step 1: Import & Convert”:

  • MP4 video files from the original HD Hero Original, HD Hero 2, HERO3, and HERO3+.
  • MOV video files from Canon and Nikon DSLRs (except in Windows 8).
  • JPG files from GoPro HD Hero, Hero 2 and Hero 3 cameras (.jpgs from other sources may work, but have not been tested nor are they officially supported).

And GoPro Studio supports importing the following file formats directly for editing in “Step 2: Edit”: GoPro CineForm AVI or MOV files (MOV only on Mac). Audio formats: MP3, WAV, AIFF, M4A and CAF

Reason: GoPro Studio supports not all kinds of MP4/MOV formats. While DJI Phantom 4 records:

Video: MP4 / MOV (MPEG – 4 AVC/H.264)

Video Recording Modes:

  • UHD: 4096×2160 (4K) 24 / 25p
  • 3840×2160 (4K) 24 / 25 / 30p
  • 2704×1520 (2.7K) 24 / 25 / 30p
  • FHD: 1920×1080 24 / 25 / 30 / 48 / 50 / 60 / 120p
  • HD: 1280×720 24 / 25 / 30 / 48 / 50 / 60p

Max Video Bitrate: 60 Mbps

Some DJI Phantom 4 4K MP4/MOV files with unacceptable high bitrate/resolution or big sized cannot be accepted by GoPro Studio. In the circumstances, we fail to import some 4K MP4 or MOV files from DJI Phantom 4 to GoPro Studio for editing.

Solution 1: Render DJI Phantom 4 4K MP4/MOV with GoPro Studio

As some guys mentioned in the DJI forum, to use GoPro Studio, you need to import the files, either .MP4 or .MOV from Phantom 4, into Studio and then render/convert them to .AVI files, this is the normal process for Studio. Once converted, they can be edited as easily as GoPro files. At the conclusion, you can export the edited cut to a number of formats, including files intended for YouTube, Facebook and such. If you try to cut the original files, you get that message saying they are unsupported. Conversion is just one extra step, not hard to do. The advantage of GoPro Studio is that it handles 4K quite well, even on slightly lesser computers, has many built in features and it is free.

Besides, if you want to work with a professional level program, Blackmagic Resolve is also free, and is the most powerful colour correcrtion package available. It’s drawback is that it needs a powerful computer to run on and is a bit primitive in the editing section at present.

Solution 2: Re-wrap/Encode DJI Phantom 4 4K to GoPro Studio editable format

To resolve the codec incompatibility issues and saving the rending time of GoPro Studio, you’d better reconvert/re-wrap/encode DJI Phantom 4 4K files to GoPro Studio editable format like AVI, MOV first. In this case we will need a GoPro Studio video converter.

Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate is just designed to batch convert Phantom 4 4K MP4 or MOV files to GoPro Studio at fast speed and without quality loss. Besides WMM, this software can also export optimized codec like DNxHD for Avid, MPEG-2 for Sony Vegas, Premiere Pro/Element, AVI forPinnacle Studio, MPEG-2 for Cyberlink PowerDirector and more NLE systems for native editing.

In terms of editing features, the converter supports:

Edit Phantom 4 4K video files in the following aspects:

  • Cut video files to capture your favorite clips
  • Crop video files to remove the black edges around your movie video
  • Rotate video files 90 Degrees, 180 Degrees, etc
  • Adjust video image in brightness, contrast and saturation
  • Add watermark/subtitle to video files
  • Remove/Replace audio from video clips

In addition, this also works as a wonderful Player with high compatibility. Better still, it supports compress big 4K video files to smaller ones, join several video into one, split video file, adjust bitrate/frame rate/size/codec, change audio channel and more for experience. For Mac users, Pavtube iMedia Converter for Mac is much cheaper in Summer Holiday Coupon Page. iPhone 7/SE/6S 4K Video and Final Cut Pro X Workflow

Last week I presented a webinar covering 4K Video, the iPhone 6s and Final Cut Pro X. As I was researching my presentation, I discovered a variety of interesting facts that I want to share with you.

Final Cut Pro X connects with your iPhone automatically; assuming the phone  is connected directly to your computer via a Lightning cable. This makes transferring files from the iPhone to the computer easy. However, even though the iPhone is directly connected, we can not capture live video from the iPhone.

Also, FCP X only checks the iPhone for content on two occasions:

When FCP X first starts
When the iPhone is first connected to the computer
This could be relevant if you are shooting on the iPhone which is still connected to your computer – for example, to move large files off your phone more quickly during production – after Final Cut is started, you’ll need to disconnect the iPhone cable, then reconnect it, in order for FCP to recognize new video files stored on the phone.

You don’t need to eject an iPhone from the Desktop to get FCP to recognize new footage. Simply disconnect the iPhone cable, wait about ten seconds, then reconnect it to your computer.

If you always shoot with the iPhone disconnected from the computer, this is a non-issue.

There are two frame sizes for 4K video:

UHD (Ultra High-Definition): 3840 x 2160 pixels
True 4K: 4096 x 2160 pixels
NOTE: A big benefit of UHD is that it exactly doubles a 1080 frame, which means that playing HD material on a UHD display will look as good as it can.

By default, the iPhone shoots H.264 1080p/30. You need to enable 4K video in Settings > Phone & Camera.

Once 4K video is selected, the iPhone shoots UHD at 30 fps. The frame rate is not adjustable.

NOTE: Thankfully, interlacing does not exist in any version of 4K media. All 4K media is progressive. Finally.

When importing files from an iPhone, media must be copied into a Library. Final Cut can’t edit video files stored directly on an iPhone.

H.264 is a very compressed 8-bit video format. The data rate for 4K video on an iPhone varies, depending upon the amount of movement between frames. During my webinar, the data rate averaged about 20 mbps; while others have reported double that rate.

For the purposes of planning, assume iPhone video requires 6.5 MB/second, 375 MB/minute, 22.5 GB/ hour. Your results will vary. Remember that iPhone storage is not unlimited.

OPTIMIZING

Conventional wisdom suggests that we should optimize 4K media during import. However, optimizing may not be the best choice. Optimizing depends on the configuration of your computer. Older machines will probably need to optimize or create proxies, but, before optimizing, try editing the native footage first. There are lots of options.

If you are able to edit the native footage smoothly, with no dropped frames or stuttering during playback – AND you don’t plan to do extensive color correction or effects – editing native video is probably the best option.

Otherwise, you can always process the optimized or proxy footage in the background while you work, this is one of the unique features of FCP X. Optimizing to ProRes means that more effects play in realtime with more video streams, and both rendering and exporting is faster.

Thinking of speed, the more RAM you have, the more footage Final Cut can cache off the drive before the system has to “page” — flush the RAM and going back to the hard drive to get more files. A hard drive is always slower than playing out of RAM and this is important when you have lots of 4K video streams.

NOTE: At a recent demo, Apple showed 16 streams of 4K media optimized to ProRes 422 playing as a multicam clip on a new Mac Pro. In fact, there’s a preference setting that automatically optimizes multicam clips that I recommend be turned on if you have a fast system.

Keep in mind that if you are dropping frames during editing, you can switch FCP to display the media at “Better Performance.” (To make the switch, go to the View menu in the top right corner of the Viewer.)

Remember, also that FCP supports editing while importing or transcoding is running in the background. So, if it is important to share a 4K master with a quick turn around, you have the best of both worlds — speed when you need it and quality later when you export the master — just switch back to original media with a single click in the View menu.

NOTE: The only video format available for optimizing is ProRes 422. If your iPhone 4K videos are not ProRes, you need convert your iPhone 7/SE/6S 4K footages to FCP X supported Apple ProRes MOV for smooth editing in FCP X. Here suggest you the best 4K video converter for FCP – Pavtube iMedia Converter for Mac (Windows) , which can convert your any iPhone 4k videos (4K MXF/MOV/MP4/MTS/MKV/H.265 etc) to FCP X friendly formats. It powerfully support Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan, Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, 10.9 Mavericks, 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.7 Lion, 10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.5 Leopard. (read review )

DATA RATES

4K video can be edited on almost all currently shipping computers. (In fact, Apple was showing 4K XAVC video editing on an iMac three years ago.) Any mid-range or above MacBook Pro, iMac or Mac Pro with at least 16 GB of RAM will easily handle editing 4K video.

The bottle-neck isn’t the computer, but storage. LOTS of large, fast storage.

4K will push the limits of older systems (say, more than 3 years old). In which case, install the fastest drives, best graphic cards, and more than the minimum amount of RAM in your system. Less than 8 GB of RAM will not yield good performance with 4K.

FCP X has been designed to take advantage of all that the hardware has to offer — without having to drop the visual quality of the original just to play it back.

PROXY FILES

When should you create proxy files? For me, there are two answers:

You have an older, slower system that can’t handle large 4K files
You are editing multicam clips
In both these cases, I would use proxy files.

SUMMARY

All too often, we obsess about the wrong things. The speed of our computer is no longer the gating factor of performance. Instead:

Buy a mid-range CPU or faster
Buy as much RAM as the system can hold, or you can afford; at least 16 GB
Buy the fastest GPU the computer supports
Buy the fastest and largest storage you can afford
Edit camera native unless your system performs poorly
Optimize media if you need significant color grading or more efficient effects
Use Proxy files on slower systems or for multicam editing
The iPhone brings 4K media into the hands of almost everyone. FCP fully supports editing 4K media but mot all 4K video formats.

My iPhone 4K webinar illustrates this entire 4K capture, storage and editing workflow. Wish you have a nice day.

Downscale DJI Phantom 4/3 4K videos to 1080p/720p

DJI just dropped their latest drone, the Phantom 4 and Phantom 3, and it’s loaded with autonomous features. They all can capture 4k video in MP4 or MOV(MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) format. They can record up to 4K videos. We all know 4K Ultra HD has become more prevalent than 1080P due to its superior viewing experience to full HD. Does this mean 1080P HD is replaced by 4K UHD? Of course NOT, though 4K ultra HD sets the world on fire, there are still tons of stuff needed to be completed in 1080P, like video playback and editing.

Major Reasons Lead to Compress and Convert DJI Phantom 4/3 4K videos to 1080p/720p

1. Fail to play DJI Phantom 4K video on media player (VLC, QuickTime, Windows Media Player, KMPlayer, GoMPlayer ) or handheld devices (Samsung, HTC, Sony, iPhone iPad), for the majority of media players and media devices work well with 1080P (1080 x 1920) rather than the newcomer 4K (4096 x 2160).

Note: though iPhone 6/6s is claimed to be able to play 4K video, iTunes will not sync 4K video so you need some other app or convert 4K to 1080P to play 4K video on iPhone 6/6s.

2. Unable to edit DJI Phantom 4K video in video editing software like iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Windows Movie Maker, Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere Pro, Cyberlink Powerdirector, etc.

3. Hard to upload DJI Phantom 4K video to video sharing sites on account of the much bigger file size (the data amount of each frame is as big as 50MB) and high definition (Instagram, vevo, veoh, yahoo, Myspace, ehow, etc. do not support 4K video).

When the DJI Phantom 4/3 4K files should be downscaled to 1080p, there are mainly two workflows:

A: First edit the project in 4K then render it in 1080p.
B: First batch convert/render all 4K clips to 1080p then edit the project in 1080p and smart-render.

When compared the two ways, we can easily find that the later workflow should require less computing power to edit the project. (Note: It could be more time consuming). For those who work on old computer, we suggest you to apply the later one. And here we will introduce the best way to convert DJI Phantom 4K video to 1080p with ease.

To convert and reduce 4K video to 1080P, you need a 4K video converter at the first place. Here according to the feedbacks of dozens of users, they unanimously recommend the award-winning 4K video compressor – Pavtube Video Converter  (Pavtube Video Converter for Mac). Pavtube Video Converter, as the pioneer video conversion app, can provide you with all the bells and whistles you are looking for in a 4K video converter program.
